About the sign
One character, cut from a single sheet of steel. The number 5 is the whole sign: there is no backing plate and no border, so the shape on the wall is the character itself.
8 Art Deco typefaces to choose from, each measured against the steel at every size offered before it was drawn for sale.

About the Art Deco Number 5 design
This five mostly pours its weight into the bowl, which swells into a fat black belly hung from a slim diagonal stem. One face splits that bowl down the middle, leaving the left half a bare outline and the right half solid like a half moon. Two others trail a thin crescent behind the curve, and one drops curves almost entirely for a squared hook with gently bent top and bottom bars.
