About the sign
One character, cut from a single sheet of steel. The letter U is the whole sign: there is no backing plate and no border, so the shape on the wall is the character itself.
8 Art Deco typefaces to choose from, each measured against the steel at every size offered before it was drawn for sale.

About the Art Deco Letter U design
The left arm of this U usually does the heavy lifting, swelling into a broad slab while the right arm thins to a wire before both meet in a deep, rounded cup. One face slices a narrow slot down the heavy side, and another splits that side into two parallel strokes. Two faces cap each arm with a long flat bar, the bars almost touching, and one squat version flicks its tips outward into slanted wings above a shallow bowl.
