Where the Vasquez name comes from

The Vasquez name came out of Galician, the language of the northwestern corner of Spain, and later spread across the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish carried it as Vasquez, written with an accent as Vasquez in its Iberian form. Two further spellings, Vazquez and Vasques, took hold in regions with seseo. The unaccented Vasquez and Vazquez forms belong to countries where Iberian languages are not commonly spoken. Spanish speakers carried the name to the Philippines, where Tagalog and Cebuano both borrowed it directly, and it ranked as the 161st most common surname there in 2014.
