Where the Tran name comes from

Tran is the plain spelling of the Vietnamese surname Trần, written 陳 in Chinese characters. In Vietnam it comes second only to Nguyen. The English form is a doublet of Tan, Chen and Chan.

The Tran ruled Vietnam as the Trần dynasty and turned back the Mongol invasions, improving on Chinese gunpowder as they did it. Arts and sciences flourished under them, and Chữ Nôm, the Vietnamese character script, was used for the first time in mainstream poetry. Emperor Trần Nhân Tông reformed Chữ Nôm and was the first emperor to write Vietnamese poetry in it.
