Where the Rodriguez name comes from

Rodriguez is son of Rodrigo, the ez on the end doing the work that son does in English. Rodrigo is Visigothic rather than Latin, built from the Gothic hrod, fame or glory, and ric, rich, so the whole name means rich in fame. It was the name of Roderic, the last Visigothic king of Spain before the Muslim conquest, and the subject of a great many legends afterwards. The surname may date from the 9th century, when patronymics first came into use, and its Portuguese twin is Rodrigues.
