Price is the Welsh ap Rhys worn down to one syllable, meaning son of Rhys, and Rhys is a Welsh name that means enthusiasm. The name comes from Deheubarth in south west Wales and belonged to its kings, among them Rhys ap Tewdwr. At the 1881 census the surname was densest in Radnorshire, where it ran at 38 times the British average, then Brecknockshire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. It is thought to have been spelled Pryce and said as Preese, and the change to an i was an affectation meant to make the name look more English.
