Where the Peters name comes from

Peters is a patronymic surname meaning "Peter's son." It was formed from the given name Peter with the patronymic suffix -s added to the end. The name arose separately in Low German, Dutch and English. German took it from Low German, where it was transferred directly from the given name.

Dutch records the same name under several spellings, among them Peterse, Petersen and Petersz. Peters can also be an English rendering of the Gaelic Mac Pheadair, which carries the same meaning. In America it became the settled form of related surnames such as Peeters and Pieters.
