Where the Parker name comes from

A Parker kept the park. The name is English and reaches that meaning through Old French, and the word is built the plain way, park plus -er. In medieval England it was also a nickname for a gamekeeper, which is the same work described from a different angle. The noun survives in English with a second and much younger sense, someone who parks a car, which is a long way from the medieval job that made the surname.
