Where the Morgan name comes from

Morgan is Welsh, from the Old Welsh personal name Morcant. The pieces of it are argued over: mor, sea, or maur, great, joined to cant, a circle, which yields either great chief or sea chief. The Welsh family was established around 1330 by Morgan ap Llewelyn, whose mother Angharad was the daughter and heiress of Sir Morgan ap Maredudd, Lord of Tredegar. Either reading makes it a name about leading rather than about a trade or a place.
