Where the Martinez name comes from

Martinez is son of Martin, and the Martin in question is the Spanish one, from the Latin Martinus and behind that the god Mars. It is the most common surname in Navarre, La Rioja, Cuenca and Murcia. San Martin and Martin are among its variations. Among the Mozarabs the name was Arabised to Mardanish, which is the form Ibn Mardanish carried.
