Where the Long name comes from

Long is a Western surname and a Chinese one, and the two share nothing but the spelling. In Ireland the Longs come from several roots at once: Norman families named de Long and le Lung who arrived with the conquest of 1066, and the Gaelic septs of O Longain and O Longaig, one seated in County Armagh and larger numbers elsewhere. The Chinese Long is the pinyin for 龍, which means dragon, and it ranked 80th among Chinese surnames in 2006. A second and now very rare Chinese name, 隆, is transcribed the same way, and in Hong Kong both are romanised as Lung.
