Where the Hill name comes from

Hill says where the family lived, on one or beside one. The English and Scottish surname is that plain, but two other roads reach the same spelling: a shortening of Hilary, and the Old English hild, meaning battle. The German Hill is a shortened Hildebrand, which shares that second root. In Finland the name is a translation, families called Maki, hill, rendering themselves into English.
