Where the Guzman name comes from

Guzman is a Spanish surname, and it began as a place name. The first bearers were called de Guzmán, meaning of Guzmán, after the village of Guzmán in the region of Burgos. The earliest person on record with the name is Rodrigo Muñoz de Guzmán, who appears in a document from 1134 and founded the noble House of Guzmán.

Portuguese has its own form of the name, Gusmão. In the Philippines, Canada and the United States the acute accent usually drops away, leaving the spelling Guzman. Cebuano and Tagalog both took the name from Spanish, and the Cebuano account traces the Spanish form itself back to Gothic.
