Where the Gomez name comes from

Gomez means son of Gome, and Gome comes from the Visigothic guma, a man. That word has relatives across the Germanic languages, the Old English guma among them, and it is related to the Latin homo, which also means man. So the name comes down to son of the man. The Portuguese and Old Galician spelling is Gomes and the Catalan is Gomis.
