Where the Evans name comes from

Evans is son of Evan, and Evan is the Welsh Ifan, a cognate of John. Welsh gives f the sound English writes as v, so Ifan became Evan and Evan became Evans. Another school of thought traces Evan instead to Yvain, the Latinised Norman-French form of the Welsh Owain, and points to Yvain des Galles, known at home as Owain Llawgoch. The Welsh patronymic ab Evan gave English Bevan, which is the same relationship with the prefix kept rather than the suffix.
