Where the Delgado name comes from

Delgado is a Spanish and Portuguese surname that grew out of the Latin word delicatus, meaning delicate or soft. In Portuguese the word delgado means thin or skinny, and the surname comes straight from it.

Spanish carried Delgado to the Philippines, where it entered Hiligaynon and Tagalog through the Catalogo alfabetico de apellidos. It is widespread in Negros Occidental and Iloilo, and common in Metro Manila, Batangas, Laguna and Cavite. In 2014 some 38,203 people in the Philippines carried it, making it the 190th most common surname there. The 2010 United States Census counted 132,985 people named Delgado, placing it 221st among surnames in the country.
