Where the Bennett name comes from

Bennett is the English form of Benedict, arriving through the Anglo-Norman Bennet, which is Benoit in modern French. The oldest public record of it is dated 1208, in County Durham. In Ireland it renders Beineid and sits in South Leinster, and it appears as MacBennett across Monaghan, Down and Tyrone. Scotland has it early too, when a Benedictus witnessed the sale of land in Perth in 1219.
